ABOUT THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM AT

MARY, MOTHER OF MANKIND

When parents present their children for Baptism, they promise to raise them in the practice of the faith by keeping God's commandments as Christ taught us, and by loving God and neighbor (Rite of Baptism). Indeed, parents are the first teachers of the faith for their children. Parents are obliged to form their children by word and example in faith and in the practice of the Christian life (can. 774 §2). By virtue of his office, the pastor is also bound to look after the catechetical formation of adults and youth in his parish (can. 776 §1).

Here at Mary, Mother of Mankind, our goal is to continue the apostolic mandate of the Lord to his apostles to go out to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Matt 28) and to proclaim the Mysteries of Salvation through the proclamation of the Word of God and celebration of the Sacraments. Our priority is to help you share the knowledge of our great Catholic Faith with your children through catechetical instruction and preparation for receiving the Sacraments (especially Baptism, First Penance and First Holy Communion, and Confirmation), and to do so in a safe, loving, and welcoming environment.

Classes for Grades 3, 5, & 6 are held on Monday afternoons from 3:45-4:45. Grades 1, 2, & 4 meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45-4:45. Children in our program receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist in Grade 2.

Special arrangements will be made for children enrolling in the program, despite their age or grade, who needs to prepare to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and Holy Eucharist.

Children begin to prepare for Confirmation in Grade 7 and receive the sacrament in Grade 9. Classes for Grades 7-9 are held on Sundays from 5:45 - 7:00 p.m. with occasional Youth Ministry nights running from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. which presents the perfect opportunity for students to attend the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Mass before class.

VOLUNTEERING

If you would like to volunteer with our Religious Education program, please leave your contact information with the parish office @ 401-231-3542. Our Religious Education Director for Grades 1-6, Bill Kirejczyk, will contact you. Volunteers, especially parents, who practice their faith and are able to effectively share the knowledge of their faith with our young parishioners, are always welcome in our program. We like to keep our parishioners involved and volunteering with the Religious Education Program.

In order to ensure that all young people in our parish come to know God and His Church in a safe and appropriate setting, all volunteers must submit to and successfully complete a criminal background check paid for by the parish, and undergo Safe Environment Training as mandated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in cooperation with the Diocese of Providence Office of Education and Compliance.
