Mission Possible 2019: A Summer of Service

From August 5th until 9th, 22 young adults ranging in age from 14 to 22 and 7 adult chaperones continued Mary Mother of Mankind’s summer program of service and community. Students moved into the Rejoice in Hope Youth Center on Monday August 5th and readied themselves for the long days that followed.

Tuesday August 6th—The day began with a trip to St. Martin de Porres Center in Providence. Our students had social time with the elderly clients and then played bingo with them. The time there ended with a healing mass in which all of the students were anointed with the Oil of the Sick and many new friendships were made! Next the students traveled to St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield. They assisted the residents in bowling and volleyball with balloons. The elderly residents thoroughly enjoyed the energy and the smiles of our students. Finally, there was a prayer service at the CYO Center; it included Exposition, Rosary, Benediction and a witness from Steven McGinn, a Rhode Islander who spoke about alcoholism and the dangers of destructive decisions.

Wednesday, August 7th—The students spent the day at Cradles to Crayons, a Boston based agency that provides clothes, toys, school supplies and other items that are needed by young children. In six hours of work, the students sorted through thousands of pounds of donations and helped over 300 children.

Thursday, August 8th—On this day the students served the poor at two agencies—McAuley House and St. Charles Soup Kitchen. The students provided a barbeque lunch and ice cream social at McAuley House and a full dinner at St. Charles.

Friday, August 9th-On this day the students attended the “Catholic and Family” day at Six Flags amusement park. Mass was celebrated in the park by Bishop Mitchell Rozanski of Springfield and the students were given an all-you-can-eat buffet in the park. Then they enjoyed the park and ended their week with some fun on the roller coasters!
